Podcast: IFS Study Reveals Major Trend Towards Green Supply Chains

According to aIFS Radio Network recently-released study conducted for IFS North America, the vast majority of middle market manufacturers are part of a green supply chain. They are either asking their vendors for environmental impact data of some type or have customers that request this information from them. In some cases, purchasing decisions are influenced by or made on the basis of this non-financial data.

Of course this places heavy demands on an enterprise software solution. According to the study, most manufacturers handle this data in either a paper-based system or in spreadsheets outside of their enterprise solution. In this month’s interview episode of the IFS Radio Network, IFS AB Director of Strategy and Research Martin Gunnarsson reviews the study results and discusses the implications for enterprise resource planning and other enterprise software.

"I think many of us are prepared to make these extra efforts. But there is one thing missing - and that is information. We need to be informed and reminded over and over again about sustainability impacts of not choosing sustainable alternatives. It is the same in the business environment, where communicating the sustainable alternative is of increasing importance for companies. They need to benchmark themselves over time and communicate how much they improve. They need to benchmark themselves against competitors and communicate how much better they are."

~ Martin Gunnarsson, Director of Research and Strategy, IFS AB

Free Report - Study Shows Usability & Enterprise Agility Key ERP Concerns

The vast majority of executives with mid- to large-sized manufacturers responding to an IFS North America research study are grappling with two trends:

  • A lack of intuitive usability in enterprise software including enterprise resource planning (ERP). This reduces productivity and keeps manufacturers from realizing a return on their ERP or enterprise asset management (EAM) investment.
  • Rigidity and inflexibility that reduces total enterprise agility. This means that as manufacturing companies experience change, their enterprise software cannot change rapidly enough, again reducing return on ERP investment and at times even causing businesses to miss out on opportunities that would require them to change the way their business operates.

The study was conducted by an independent research company in early 2011 among more than 200 executives with manufacturing operations with greater than $100 million in revenue.

Study respondents gave their enterprise software generally poor marks for usability. Only 10 percent of manufacturing executives participating in a study conducted for IFS North America said their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software was “very easy and intuitive to use.” And almost 60 percent of respondents said their enterprise resource planning (ERP) or other enterprise software slows them down and prevents their organizations from changing the way they do business.

Meet the IFS Team

Each month the IFS customer newsletter will feature an IFS employee.

This month's spotlight is on:

Patrick - Senior Business Analyst

"I am a senior business analyst for IFS, working out of my home office in Bridgewater, New Jersey. I have a MBA and MSc from Rutgers University, with a degree in Business/Mechanics and Materials Science/Engineering. I have been with IFS for five years and before that I was actually a customer of IFS.

The thing I like the most about working for IFS is the variety and competency of our customers. The ability to work with each customer and share my knowledge with them as well as learn from them is very enjoyable. Of course, the ultimate satisfaction comes when the customer goes live and says 'I really like the IFS software!'

On a personal note, I am married with three grown boys - Christopher, James and David, and have a 12-year-old grandson."
