Beyond ERP: How Project-Based Solutions (PBS) Provide Improved Benefits to the Integrated Project Lifecycle Webinar

When: March 23, 2011 from 2 - 3 p.m. Eastern Time

Project centric organizations have struggled for more than a decade to reap the kind of benefits the manufacturing industry has experienced with integrated ERP systems. The primary obstacle has been that traditional ERP systems were developed to support short, repetitive production cycles tied to a master schedule, whereas project centric companies generally have custom, build-to-spec projects.

While ERP systems could support many of the corporate functions of a project centric organization, these companies were often forced to develop in-house applications, or modify their ERP solution in order to support their more complex business processes. Enter the Project-Based Solution, which combines the integrated enterprise benefits of ERP, but are designed specifically to support the complex business processes associated with engineering, construction, EPCI contracting, fabrication, engineer-to-order, equipment installation and other project centric organizations.

By attending this complimentary webinar you will:

Discover the fundamental differences between traditional ERP and PBS.
Examine examples of how project-based organizations are reaping the benefits.
Learn how PBS supports integrated project lifecycle & ISO standards, like 15926.
Enjoy Q&A with the presenter, IFS Global Product Director for PBS Kenny Ingram.

Free White Paper: Process Automation Integration Using OPC  Download White Paper

The need to exchange data in real time between different types of industrial control systems and business applications has been a reality for a long time. IFS can provide this integration, opening up new opportunities for communication in the gray zone between business applications and production-side automation systems.

The integration is built using OPC1 technology, which eliminates the need for expensive custom interfaces between disparate computing solutions and enables the creation of re-usable modules, thereby cutting costs, speeding development cycles and promoting increased operating efficiency.

One example of this is when an event in the production system requires some maintenance activity. The information about the event is sent from the production system to IFS Applications. A work order is created automatically based on criteria-based preventive maintenance, without any human interaction.

Podcast: eCommerce for Engineer to Order Companies?

You bet! In this month’s episode of the IFS Radio Network, IFS Senior Implementation Manager Greg Romanello shares high-level thoughts on how engineer-to-order (ETO) companies can use ERP to implement eIFS Radio NetworkCommerce. He also outlines the specific benefits that can be expected. ETO and eCommerce might not sound compatible given that eCommerce is normally associated with retail or make-to-stock environments, where the web facilitates simple transactions. But with the right ERP environment, the complex and collaborative sales and project lifecycles associated with ETO can in fact be handled electronically. Some of the most common benefits in this type of arrangement are associated with lean handling of documents as drawings and other data can be shared in real-time. Sharing of documents and other communications, according to Romanello, is best achieved by opening a collaboration portal directly into an ERP environment – as opposed to bolting on a separate, parallel layer of technology designed to facilitate collaboration.

"In some proj
ect-oriented manufacturing companies, there is a lot of communication that has to take place. And there is a lot of searching for the documents that you need to have in order to have a meaningful conversation. So inherent in IFS Applications is the organization of this information, and the portal simply presents it in a user-tailored fashion so that we can tailor how that information is presented, how it is managed, how it is controlled and how it is reviewed for all of your collaborators."

- Greg Romanello, IFS North America Senior Implementation Manager

IFS Hosts the First Project-based Industry Advisory Council

IFS launched the first Project-based Industry Advisory Council (PAC), with the objective to establish a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience between IFS and its customers within the project-based industry. Those invited are world-renowned organizations who are all leaders within their respective field. The agenda revolves around opportunities and challenges facing the project-based industry today.

For many years IFS has worked actively to create forums where customers and partners can meet and discuss market challenges and exchange ideas. In addition to user groups, such as InFocuS in North America, and OpenIFS – IFS’s online community – the Industry Advisory Councils established a point of convergence where customers and IFS global industry experts can discuss needs, requirements, and ideas in an open manner. This advisory council will be the first with focus on the project-based industry, an industry in which IFS has many years of experience.

"One of the central objectives with this council is to maximize the benefits that our customers reap from using our project-based industry solutions," IFS Global Industry Director, Construction and Contracting Kenny Ingram said. "For IFS, we benefit from our customers who hold the real expertise when it comes to best practices within project management. Our customers get the opportunity to influence the IFS product direction, which means their best practice processes can become part of the product."

IFS Signs 5-year Support Contract With Eurofighter

The Eurofighter consortium has signed a five-year contract with IFS to maintain its IFS Applications-based system, which is handling the Industrial Repair Service (IRS) for the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The contract will continue to support Typhoon deployments through the next five years, enabling through-life management and support initiatives.

IRS, which is a key component of the aircraft’s repair and overhaul solution, has included modifications and enhancements to align the system to changing commercial and operational environments. The Eurofighter consortium targets further improvements to handle Radar and DASS items which are now managed under this service.

Eurofighter Typhoon has been designed for ease of support over its full service life, and will deliver high operational availability together with low cost of ownership. IRS is a key component of the support solution and allows Eurofighter nations to track critical parts on the operating base or aircraft, through the industrial repair loop and transportation system. Performance-related functionality links payment for the exchange service to the supplier’s performance, in terms of waiting times and number of defects per flying hour. Payments and/or penalties are also linked to agreed performance measurement criteria.
