"Our current enterprise solution was too restrictive to support our current needs and plans for future growth. We needed to look for a new solution, one that was more focused on Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and had a strong financial suite. IFS offered the best integrated enterprise solution we could find, with best of breed maintenance solutions."

IFS Podcast: Choosing ERP for Your Shrinking Workforce

Listen to the IFS Radio Network!

In this month's IFS Radio Network podcast, Anders Lif, IFS AB Global Director of Industry and Product Marketing, talks about how Web 2.0 can rescue industrial companies faced with the aging and impending retirement of its workforce.

Shrinking workforce issues are a pressing concern for industrial companies throughout the developed world as existing employees get older and retire. ERP has a role to play and Anders Lif explains how enterprise software is evolving to allow the smaller generations to come to do more with less and benefit from the knowledge of their predecessors.

"It turns out that 78 million workers in the US work force are starting to retire. And they
are being replaced by a generation that is only 50 million people. That of course creates
a gap in and of itself that demands increased efficiency in the way we are doing things. Another consideration as well is that this younger generation has completely different expectations of what work will offer them as opposed to what they will offer work, and
this creates some challenges. Another interesting aspect of the aging workforce is that it
is basically only a problem in the western or well-developed countries. Because in the
less-developed countries, we have a lot of generations of young people to support a
fairly small number of elderly people …"

- Anders Lif, IFS AB Global Director of Industry and Product Marketing

Customer Case Study: Harry's Fresh Foods Gets Results From Using Constraint-Based Scheduling

In 2002, IFS customer Harry's Fresh Foods built a state-of-the-art processing plant designed for the smooth flow of materials from fresh, dry, and wet ingredients, through preparation, staging, cooking, packaging, and out the door to their customers. Soon after this plant was put into operation, they began the search for a new ERP system to help manage their significant growth.

During the selection process, Harry's elevated the importance of the constraint management and scheduling portion of their ERP selection criteria and implemented constraint-based scheduling (CBS) in phase 1. Harry's went live with the entire system in just 120 days.

Read more about Harry's Fresh Foods use of IFS' financial and supply chain solutions, including constraint-based scheduling.

"By using constraint-based scheduling, we are able to establish load limits for each fill line that creates the most effective use of our chill lines. Now, the system will not allow our schedule to become unbalanced, which will ultimately result in an increase in throughput of over 20%."

- Brad Paris, Vice President of Supply Chain and Project Manager, Harry's Fresh Foods

Survey Results: Energy Companies and Their Service Providers Can Still Improve In Information Systems Management 'Best Practices'

By Bill Brocatoto at Oil and Gas Investor

"Business sustainability and growth in today's global markets increasingly rely on advanced information and communication technologies. There are few top executives who would argue that point. In fact, integrated information management systems, including of course enterprise resource planning (ERP) and enterprise resource management (ERM) applications, are a bit of a double-edged sword since successful implementation can be elusive if not properly planned.

In an attempt to better understand the importance of information-system applications use in the energy industry, global enterprise-applications company IFS commissioned a survey on unified management of project asset-life-cycles to evaluate energy companies' current integrated information systems capabilities in the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors, as well as that of service providers.

From the IFS-commissioned survey results, nearly 55 percent of the companies responding report reliance on integrated information systems. However, in stark contrast, about 36 percent of the responding companies earning revenues from upstream construction and asset management projects, did not have an integrated ERP/ERM system in place."
