General Dynamics Selects IFS To Provide IT Backbone for Navy Logistics Contract

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems has chosen IFS Applications as its IT backbone solution for a U.S. Navy performance-based logistics contract.

Under its contract with the Navy, General Dynamics will be responsible for logistics support of mission computers for several types of F/A-18 and AV-8B aircraft. General Dynamics' responsibilities will include making repairs, providing spare systems and modules, arranging transportation, managing obsolescence and controlling inventories. In support of this effort General Dynamics will use IFS Applications for supply chain, tracking, repair, maintenance and reporting functions.

"IFS defense solutions are designed with evolution in mind. In order to effectively manage logistics for U.S. defense organizations, companies like General Dynamics must utilize technology that is reliable and easily adaptable," IFS North America President and CEO Cindy Jaudon said. "The demands placed on defense suppliers change so rapidly that an agile enterprise application is crucial. Combine the ability to reconfigure and add functionality to meet customers' specific needs and you have technology that can give Department of Defense contractors a real competitive edge."

Fast Track Implementation

In July'sListen to the IFS Radio Network! episode of the IFS Radio Network podcast, IFS customer Jay Michael of Colfax Corporation discusses his company's rapid roll-out of IFS Applications across multiple divisions. Anyone who insists that implementing an enterprise software application requires a long implementation process ought to talk to Jay Michael, who in one case implemented functionality for an entire division in a little more than three months.

"
To roll out a site fast, the
number one thing is not to try
to redesign the process while
you're doing it. Take it as-is.
Even if it means extra steps in the system. You can get to that later. The fastest way to increase the scope and lengthen the process
is to do process redesign at the
same time you are implementing... We just don't have the time or manpower to do the 'German
thing,' as I call it, and put eight people in a room for six months
to debate about it."

IFS Pinpoints Project Centric Business Model as the Key to Success in Global Economic Downturn

Based on 25 years of experience in developing software that supports Project Centric businesses, IFS, is advising businesses to tear down the barriers inherent in traditional organizational structures by adopting a Project Centric approach. IFS has identified time, risk, cost, cash and resources as the five key performance measures a business must track in order to improve efficiency and remain agile in a global marketplace.

Traditional organizational structures and systems make understanding real-time operational situations very difficult, delaying corrections to resourcing and supply, costing the business money and making it almost impossible to decide whether an opportunity will ultimately be profitable. Software applications that record, monitor and optimize these five fundamentals and encourage collaboration are proven to help a business become more agile and better able to respond to global and local challenges.

"Businesses require Project Centric capabilities that remove the
old-fashioned constraints. Managers need to be able to assemble and
re-assemble the best mix of people, assets and resources for particular projects, and employees are demanding 'individualized' systems that mirror the realities of their changing work and personal lives. This approach gives companies visibility of likely consequences from business
decisions, so they can manage the future, not only the past."
